"Diáspora put on an explosive and volcanic performance at their gig on April the 26th at the RNCM. There was no sign of ashen faces in the crowd, despite it being a Monday night at the start of the summer exam period at the college, and it was impossible for audience members to resist foot tapping, clapping or even salsa-ing along to the flowing rhythms, which as we have come to expect from the band, were as hot as lava.
Rorito Martín’s performance of “La Bomba” showed that he is rapidly growing in confidence as both vocalist and band director, and his sax playing showed consummate professionalism from someone who has really forced himself under the skin of Latin jazz. Two new recruits in the horn section provided excellent cover while Rory found himself up front at the mic. Sarita’s elastic vocals in the finale complemented her performance throughout, grabbing by the throat and making you cry “¡Sí!” as she asks “¿Do you really wanna dance?”. The beautiful Diáspora string quartet added elegant colour and poise to the performance of “Habana del este” by the Buena Vista Social Club. Heider and Mark blasted their brass solos deep into the unusually humid Manchester night, their squeals resonating deep into the souls of the watching crowd. The rhythm section were as tight as a conga drum skin, keeping the pace pumping throughout the set. Luciano arrived fresh out of the favelas five hours before the gig, and his cameo appearance provided a picante taster of things to come.
